Hurray for May

It's that time of year where gallivanting is in the air. Monday I fly to Berlin to explore the wonders of this formerly divided city. Ironically, I wrote to the hostel in terrible German and received a response back in terrible English. I just want to speak your language! I don't want to become one of those stereotypical English tourists who speaks slowly in English in hopes that this foreigner can grasp what I am saying. Maybe I'll do lots of arm gestures, drawing out the Italian in me (an 8th on my maternal side).  Meanwhile, I've been practicing how to order vegetarian schnitzel (which sort of sounds like a bad sneeze). I remember Germany serving mainly meat dishes so I must don my survival robe and scrounge a few veggies here and there. At least I will try to communicate on a non-condescending level, which includes their own language.

My mother reminded me yesterday, over the phone as she is on a different continent (same planet), that I am an 8th German. And Jewish. But the whole Jewish thing didn't pass on through her dad so I really have no legit claim to fame.

Also sehr excited to visit Pergamon Museum. My former professors only told me a mere dozen or so times to go and see the reconstruction of the Ishtar Gates. So I will! And Nefertiti's bust. My poor other half has no idea what he has got himself into but I have agreed to go visit some art galleries with him. Sadly, he politely declined the suggestion of visiting a concentration camp with me :( . And nobody else appears up for this emotionally bonding experience!

In other news, some of my writing has been recommended to the University of Texas. I've had three submission rejections in one week but am taking them very well. I'm trying not to be so pretentious but it is difficult. I think all writers must be pretentious to pursue their "vanity projects." Also began writing a screenplay and really enjoying the entire process. It would be a dream to see an idea, a story in my head transformed into motion picture. How crazy would that be, right?

Auf wiedersehen!
